Figure 29.1. Inscription found in the vicinity of Ma’sarah, north of Helwan, from the reign of Necho II. In the center we see the saddleback hieroglyph denoting “mountain” (above the lacuna shown as a blurred area), To its right is the sign for “heaven,” or “sky” (the bar with downturned ends), beneath which is an ellipse with an eye inside representing the toponym “An” or “Anu,” and underneath this is the “mouth” sign denoting the letter R.

A detailed map of the Helwan district executed in 1895–1896 by Georg August Schweinfurth (1836–1925), a famous Baltic German botanist, traveler, and ethnologist, to accompany the book Helwan and the Egyptian Desert written by W. Page May and published in 1901,3 shows “Mons troicus” as being located close to the summit of Gebel Hôf (coordinates 29°54΄0˝ N 31°21΄0˝ E). This is a prominent mountain plateau that rises to a height of 286 meters (68 meters above sea level) and overlooks Wadi Hôf, a deep curling ravine that ends abruptly in a vertical cliff face at its eastern end (see fig. 7.1). Both Gebel Hôf and Wadi Hôf lie due east of Ma’sarah, making it likely that the former is the mountain named in the inscription as “An of his ancestors.” Both locations were also sites of the Chalcolithic El Omari culture, which thrived in the area circa 5500–4500 BCE. This superseded Helwan’s much earlier Epipaleolithic and later Pre-Pottery Neolithic settlements. Furthermore, the main Helwan cemetery at Ezbit el-Walda lies within the paleofan, the outpouring of alluvial deposits, that emerges from Wadi Hôf.
